Cosmos: Dee Dee Bridgewater - Εικόνα

One of the greatest jazz performers of all time, Dee Dee Bridgewater returns to Athens, a city that embraced her previous appearances, to launch the Cosmos concert series.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, her involvement with music seemed almost inescapable in light of the great music tradition of her birthplace and her father being a jazz trumpeter. She released her debut album, Afro Blue, in 1974, and in the nearly 50 years that followed since she has released some twenty more, while also making countless guest appearances in albums of the likes of Roy Ayers, Ray Brown and Christian McBride. Among other accolades, she has earned three Grammy awards and a Tony award (for her role in the 1975 musical The Wiz). She has appeared on Broadway and in films. She has a long history of philanthropy and advocacy, having founded programs to help women in music (especially women in jazz music) and served as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador.

Now in her seventies, Bridgewater has secured a spot in the brilliant continuum of great jazz singers, as a successor to jazz icons such as Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.
