Wednesday 23 November 2022
In November, as part of the thematic unit “An Arts' Gaze,” we will be discussing, during our well-established meeting with the Cinobo team of curators, how one artist chooses to capture on the big screen the life of another, in this case of great director Jean-Luc Godard, who passed away recently. Is this a conventional biopic, or perhaps not?
November Movie: Godard Mon Amour (2017)
Michel Hazanavicius, best known for his award-winning film The Artist, dares to direct a divergent biopic, looking at the life and work of Godard through a pop rom-com filled with Godardian references and focused on the late director's big love for Anne Wiazemsky and May 1968, starring Louis Garrel in the role of the great auteur.
Summary:Paris 1967. Jean-Luc Godard, the most famous filmmaker of his generation, is filming La Chinoise, starring the woman he loves, 20 years his junior Anne Wiazemsky. The happy couple in love decides to get married. But the poor reviews of the film lead its creator to withdraw into himself. The events of May 1968 will intensify this process and Godard’s crisis will change him profoundly. He will be transformed from famous director to marginal Maoist artist, misunderstood and incomprehensible in equal parts.
Competing entry in the Official Selection, Cannes Film Festival, 2017; Competing entry for the César Award, 2018; Competing entry for the Lumières Award, 2018.
