True to its annual tradition, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) is putting on its holiday glam and getting ready to welcome the public for the turn of the year. Opening the New Year’s Eve celebration at 22.30 is Jerome Kaluta and his Big Band, with a unique concert of soul and funk hits. The New Year is ushered in with a spectacular fireworks show that will light up the Athenian sky, while the first few minutes of the New Year mark the start of the first race of the year, the long-established SNF RUN: 2023 FIRST RUN of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). Thereafter, a big party is thrown at the Agora, featuring DJ Beppe Loda. An indispensable part of the program are the striking choreographies of the Fountains at the Canal. The extravaganza will be hosted by actress Nandia Kontogeorgi.

At the same time, the Ice Rink and Stavros Niarchos Park will remain open, just for this one night, until 02.00 in the morning, for all those who wish to ring in the New Year with some figure-skating, or some games by the four impressive Light Installations. Balloons for the children, treats for all, and many more surprises complement the New Year's Eve scenery at the SNFCC.

The festivities at the SNFCC will be broadcast live on ERT2 and live-streamed on snfcc.org.

The detailed program of the New Year’s Eve celebrations at the SNFCC is as follows:

Jerome Kaluta & Big Band

Soul Train Edition

Shortly before the turn of the year, the incomparable Jerome Kaluta takes the stage at the Agora, accompanied by his 10-strong Big Band, for a concert featuring the greatest soul and funk hits bringing Motown to life in the present day.

All time classics by James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Manu Dibango , Curtis Mayfield, Aretha Franklin, The Blues Brothers and many more legendary artists who have made up the soundtrack of our lives, call on us to dance away the most wonderful night of the year.

Born in Greece to Congolese parents, Jerome Kaluta is a unique performer, songwriter and actor. He combines his African-European musical influences with funk, soul, reggae and disco, merging them into his musical production and performance, the so-called Urban Soul Experience.

Jerome Kaluta’s Big Band consists of:

Ioanna Kallitsantsi - Vocals
Odysseas Apostolopoulos - Keys, Vocals
Michalis Karagiannis - Electric Guitar
George Kalogeropoulos - Bass
Nikos Anastasiadis - Drums
Giannis Kanaris - Trombone
Tommy Lynch - Saxophone
Konstantinos Saivanidis - Trumpet
Stelios Michas-Englezos - Trombone

DJ set: Beppe Loda

With the advent of 2023, the Agora is welcoming the fabled Beppe Loda in a surprise DJ set revolving around disco music.

A leader of the Afro movement of the mid-’80s in northern Italy and resident DJ of the legendary Typhoon Club, Beppe Loda is widely regarded as one of the most influential and eclectic DJs of the past 30 years.

He experimented with mixing a wide variety of music genres that had never been heard on world dancefloors before — such as funky, afro, kraut, weird electronics, post wave, Brazilian music and obscure disco — creating a hybrid that was to later prevail as “cosmic” music.

He steadily features in the lineups of the best clubs and festivals around the world, and his DJ sets at MoMA PS1 are characterized by many as simply “mythical”!

His last stop for this year, after his tour in America, is Athens and the iconic venue of the SNFCC.

SNF RUN: 2023 FIRST RUN

It is not a common way to celebrate the New Year, but this is one of the things that make it so unusually inviting, one of the reasons why it has acquired a following of hundreds of people who grow more and more every year.

The SNF RUN: FIRST RUN of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), the first race of the year, begins at 00:04, right after the turn of the year and the spectacular fireworks show, covering a distance of 3 km.

This year’s SNF RUN: FIRST RUN is of particular importance, because 2023 marks the 150th anniversary since the birth of Spyros Louis, the first modern-day Marathon winner at the Olympic Games of Athens in 1896. To celebrate this anniversary, commemorative cups will be awarded to the first man and the first woman to reach the finish line.

This year, too, the race has a charity aspect. The amount of money collected from the symbolic participation fee (€5 minimum contribution) will support two nonprofit organizations dedicating their work to children: Karkinaki and SVOURENEIO Center of Creative Activities for Children with Disabilities of the Municipality of Kos.

The SNF RUN: 2023 FIRST RUN is not a competitive race. Nevertheless, runners will be officially timed so they know their performance in achieving the first goal of the year.

SNF RUN: FIRST RUN is staged thanks to an exclusive grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), which covers all production costs. The event is materialized under the organizational oversight of the nonprofit Regeneration & Progress and the Sports Excellence program of the 1st Department of Orthopedic Surgery of the University of Athens Medical School. The run is held in cooperation with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC).
