The Canal is one of the most significant components of the architectural design of the SNFCC. The architect’s goal was to redefine the relationship with the sea, not only referring to the view of the sea but also to the physical presence of water. It is 400m long, 30m wide and goes down to 70cm towards the edges and 150cm at its center, and it develops across the main pathway of visitors, leading to the main complex of buildings.

Given that the Canal is formed by seawater, which eventually returns back to the sea, the use of chlorine is strictly forbidden. As a result of this natural process, it is expected that algae is formed at certain parts of it.

Two robotic mechanisms are installed on a permanent basis, removing the algae that is naturally formed at its bottom, while 1-2 times on annual basis a scheduled cleaning process takes place, lasting approximately 4 weeks, resulting in its depletion and then infusion of new water from the sea.

From February 27 onwards this scheduled cleaning process will be in progress, combined with maintenance works.

For this reason, the frequent sports activities related to the Canal, as well as the Dancing Fountains' daily water shows will be again available from March 15, after the completion of the SNFCC Canal cleaning.
