On December 17th the Greek National Opera (GNO) presented its programming for the period 2014-2019. The Minister of Culture and Sports, Mr. Panos Panagiotopoulos lauded the GNO for its work and social contribution and announced the extension of the tenure of the GNO’s Artistic Director, Mr. Myron Michailidis. The press conference was attended by the Mr. George Agouridis, board member of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and Mr. Ioannis Trohopoulos, Managing Director of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.
The majority of GNO’s planned activities and programming for the period 2014-2019 concern the SNFCC where the GNO will move upon the project’s completion. The GNO is planning to present annually 14 to 16 productions at the SNFCC, 3 to 5 of which will be new material. The GNO’s priorities include strengthening its global presence by forging partnerships with foreign renowned operas such as London’s Royal Opera House, Arena di Verona, Teatro La Fenice and the Welsh National Opera; working closely with and promoting talented Greek artists working in Greece and abroad, and making extensive use of the SNFCC’s experimental theater to promote and leverage young artists. Moreover the GNO plans to continue its extrovert campaign trying to appeal to the general public as well as extend its educational programs and seminars in collaboration with the National Library of Greece.
