The Journey to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center begins on December 11th!

The “Journey to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center” begins in just a few days, inviting the public and especially the youth to take part in original and creative actions while also getting the opportunity to learn more about the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) and get a taste of the services it will be offering its visitors when it opens in 2016.

The “Journey to the SNFCC” begins on Wednesday, December 11th, at the Municipal Library of Haidari, launching a varied program of cultural and educational events that will continue until the end of February 2014 and will be held in five municipal libraries in Attica (Athens, Ilioupoli, Haidari, Halandri and Keratsini-Drapetsona), as well as in public spaces, regenerating the urban neighborhoods and redefining the citizens’ relationship with their city. In particular, up until the end of the year, the program includes events that will be hosted at the Municipal Library of Haidari and the Central Library of the Municipality of Athens, and culminate in an event celebrating the longest night of the year on December 21st, at the National Library of Greece (NLG).

All events are free to the public and include the following activities:

Popular artists reading from their favorite books. Dozens of actors and musicians visit the municipal libraries and engage the audience in a creative dialogue through reading excerpts from their favorite books.

Debate contests that serve as a starting point for the youth to discuss the problems of their generation, as well as to support their views with arguments. Joining the audience for the debates is free; those wishing to take part in the contests must register in advance at the participating municipal libraries.

“Opera in a suitcase” performances of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. A magical journey into the world of opera unfolds before the audience, who will have the opportunity to enjoy up close, in various public spaces, a flexible opera production under the direction of Alexandros Efklidis and with the accompaniment of the Greek National Opera’s (NLG) excellent singers and musicians.

“Green” excursions and ecological walks, in conjunction with WWF. Under the guidance of WWF, the libraries invite citizens to get to know the green spaces in their neighborhoods and discover alternative ways of using them. Through a special questionnaire that will be distributed to the participants, citizens will make note of the green spaces in their city, their current condition and their needs, thus helping to promote them as “green contemporary hubs of education and culture”.

Experimental film workshops will run in each of the participating libraries, addressed to young people interested in creating a short amateur film, based on easy-to-use technological solutions. The duration of each workshop will be 14 hours and participants are required to enroll in advance at the respective libraries. Screenings of the films created during the workshops will be held at each municipality, as part of the program of events.

The “Journey to the SNFCC” Program is carried out by the SNFCC in conjunction with the GNO and the NLG, with the exclusive support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).
