Who was Louise Bourgeois and how did her life’s events influence the creative process of her sculpture?
Her work shows that art can be a means of expression and transformation, a way to unleash personal thoughts and feelings and free oneself from hurtful experiences. How can we convey our emotions onto a material, creating a shape or form of our own, our own artwork, as Louise Bourgeois did? What did she mean when she said, “I am not what I say, I am what I do”?

In this children’s sculpture workshop, taking place on the occasion of Louise Bourgeois’s Maman being exhibited at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, we will seek to unravel the threads of Bourgeois’s artistic life and create our own sculptures, inspired by her broader oeuvre.

We will be focusing on three important periods of her life (first period: human figures; second period: different materials; third period: closed indoor spaces). The sculpture Maman will always serve as our starting point, in every workshop, seeing as the spider was a theme the artist worked on for about 50 years.

Participants will get to know these different periods through pictures and drawings, the different materials she used, as well as the symbolisms she chose based on the experiences of her childhood.
“I do, I undo, I redo,” Louise Bourgeois

In this way, children will be introduced to her work and, through a state of fragmentariness, they will create works resulting from their own emotions (fear, anger, joy), thus discovering a world where art is directly linked to life.
