Microcosmos: Ruby Rushton - Εικόνα

Largely an offspring of the versatility and productivity of musician and producer Tenderlonious, Ruby Rushton are at the forefront of the contemporary London music scene, and more specifically of the so-called “new jazz” movement.

Guided by the teachings of John Coltrane, Ruby Rushton paved the way for a younger generation of jazz musicians, already with their first album, Two For Joy, released in 2015. The album featured spiritual jazz with a fresh attitude and crossovers to musical idioms such as hip hop, afrobeat, post-bop and funk, with ever-present individual features of the underground scene. Since then, Ruby Rushton have been on an evolutionary path that reached an apex, in terms of acceptance and success, with their fourth album, Ironside (2019), which received rave reviews from the international music press as one of the best jazz albums in recent years.

Continuing along a similar trajectory, the group went on to further open up the spectrum of spiritual jazz through high-quality releases to great popular acclaim, paving the way for the world’s jazz scenes and festivals. Thanks to the creative genious of Tenderlonious and their high aesthetics as musicians, Ruby Rushton are at the forefront of the preferences of jazz influencers who dominate the media as journalists, DJs, radio producers and so on. But, above all, they are at the top of the preferences of a new generation of jazz listeners who get to discover, through the band’s music, qualities that have dominated modern jazz by iconic musicians such as John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Yusef Lateef, and Pharoah Sanders, as well as pioneers of jazz rock — as we have come to recognize them in the 21st century — such as Herbie Hancock with The Headhunters, or Chick Corea with Return to Forever.
