Using the basic forms from Takis’ sculptures – such as spirals, spheres and aerials, as our starting point, we will construct our own sculptural objects, giving a new lease of life to everyday, second-hand objects (upcycling), as Takis did. Participants will explore a diverse selection of objects, to find the ones that are able to be transformed into something other than their regular use, to be transformed into symbols and configured into new sculptural propositions.
This process will open up several routes in the development of each individual structure, exploring the natural properties of the objects and materials, their potential to be combined with other materials, the possible ways for each structure to be re-used.
Each session will begin with an on-site observation of a basic form, as it is conveyed in the sculptures of Takis. To start with, we will examine how these forms are employed and integrated in Takis’ sculptures. Following that, we will look for similar versions in the available objects/materials, and modify them accordingly, with the use of color, extensions, suspensions, cuts, etc.
Session 1: Spheres and half-spheres, inspired by the “Aeolians”
Focusing on the concept of suspension and wind-assisted free movement and rotation, we will explore the impact of gravity and, using spheres as our base form, we will create original balanced and weighted objects.
Session 2: Spirals
Starting from the archetypal shape of the spiral and its three-dimensional view as applied in the principle of Archimedes’ screw and integrated into Takis’ sculptures, we will investigate its vertical positioning as a central axis (backbone), and attempt to develop a vertical spiral form in the space, exploring the elasticity, the repetition, and the perpetuity of the form.
Session 3: Aerials
Inspired by the “Light Signals”, their visual identity and their use as signifiers of meaning in the space, we will experiment with the construction of an aerial as a transmitter.
