For the new season, Parabases, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center’s Readers Theater, transforms the Lighthouse into a literary salon, where audiences have the opportunity to enjoy famous actors semi-staged performances of short stories by great writers. Sunday afternoons are dedicated to masters of short-form writing, in rehearsed readings designed for modern audiences, approaching a classic genre in a fresh and original way.
In January, Parabases bring to life, for the audience of SNFCC, Edgar Allan Poe’s masterful short story The Fall of the House of Usher, considered a landmark of horror fiction, in a theatrical reading in Greek by Nikos Hatzopoulos, staged by Katerina Evangelatos.
A visitor arrives at the dark house of Usher on a visit to his childhood friend, Roderick Usher. The host later informs the visitor that his sister has died and insists that she be entombed for two weeks in the family tomb located in the house before being permanently buried. It eventually turns out that she is not dead; when she reappears, the visitor flees, as the house splits in two and its ruins sink forever in a small mountain lake.
A riveting narrative, not only for fans of the genre, but for everyone.
