Monday 27 July 2020
In July, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) introduces a new activity for those who love books: the SNFCC Reading Club, coordinated by the author Panos Tsiros.
On the last Monday of each month, starting on Monday, July 27th, book lovers have a standing appointment at the Mediterranean Garden of the Stavros Niarchos Park, from 19:00 to 21:00, to discuss the book they read during the month that just passed. Each time, the group of readers will have the opportunity to come together and use the book of the month as a starting point to share experiences, emotions and ideas, as well as to create new friendships and exchange opinions.
The Reading Club launches with Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s masterpiece, One hundred years of solitude (1967), one of the most astounding novels of our times, which has sold more than thirty million copies worldwide. It was written during a time of financial struggle for Marquez, who, after taking care of all his outstanding professional obligations, shut himself away in his study and worked on the manuscript for almost an entire year, allowing, however, for certain excerpts to be published in the Press. When the book was finally printed, the response from readers and critics was unprecedented: the book was re-printed three times in the space of four months! Fifty years later, Marquez’s universe with its magical yet realistic characters, its tales and its allegories, continues to enchant readers, as it constitutes the “mural of an era”. A mural that “speaks” of personal isolation, as well as of the loneliness of authority, bigotry and war. In One hundred years of solitude, Marquez, with exceptional literary flair, introduces us to the hero of freedom, Colonel Aureliano Buendia, and describes his tragic journey, from the years of great prosperity until the final fall.
