21 January 2014

Following the very successful events that took place in the Municipal Library of Haidari, the National Library of Greece (NLG) and the Central Library of the Municipality of Athens, the “Journey to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center” continues, and invites the public to discover the project that aspires to change the citizens’ everyday lives, in just a few years’ time.

Over 1,000 people, aged between 4 and 75 years old, have already taken part in the Program’s events in November and December 2013, embracing its vision and taking up its creative cultural, educational and “green” proposals. The events’ popularity is expected to grow even further, as the optimistic message of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) continues its journey up until February 27th, travelling to Halandri, Keratsini-Drapetsona and Ilioupoli.

The second part of the “Journey to the SNFCC” program begins in a musical way on Thursday, January 23rd, in Halandri, where Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni will be performed for the public, in the form of “Opera in a Suitcase”, by the Greek National Opera (GNO), marking the launch of a diverse program of events that will run up until the end of February in Halandri, Keratsini-Drapetsona and Ilioupoli.

The events pertain to:

Popular Greek artists reading excerpts from their favorite books.

Debate contests on issues of interest to the young generation. Those wishing to take part in the contests must register at the participating municipal libraries.

Filmmaking workshops to create amateur films and present them to the public. The duration of each workshop will be 14 hours and participants are required to enroll in advance at the respective libraries.

Flexible “Opera in a suitcase” performances of Mozart’s Don Giovanni by the GNO. The show, directed by Alexandros Efkleidis, will be held in public spaces, inviting the general public on a journey into the world of opera.

“Green” actions, recreational excursions and ecological walks in the parks and green spaces of our city, in conjunction with WWF, to raise awareness, as well as promote parks as places for contemporary citizens to meet and take action.

All events are free to attend but, due to their popularity, priority tickets for all events held in indoor spaces will be issued an hour before the scheduled start time, at the venue where the events are being held.

The “Journey to the SNFCC” Program is carried out by the SNFCC in conjunction with the GNO and the NLG, through an exclusive grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).
